Three cities just made their final pitch to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and will find out their fate later today. The cities are Pyeongchang, South Korea; Munich, Germany; and Annecy, France.
The vote and final announcement from the IOC is expected around 11:00 a.m. ET.
There is no clear favourite this time around. Pyeongchang bid on and lost the 2010 and 2014 games and has already built many of the facilities that would be needed.
South Korea’s defending Olympic gold medalist in figure skating Yu-Na Kim gave an emotional speech, praising the Olympic movement for allowing her to achiever her dream. (Follow Chicago Tribune reporter Philip Hersh, @olyphil, for updates on the presentations and the vote.)
Also, if you consider Sochi, Russia, to be in Europe then France and Germany would be too close to the site of the 2014 Games to be considered.
However, Munich is a strong challenger with some Olympic history on its side. If picked, it would be the first city to host both a Summer and Winter Games.
Check back at 11:00 a.m. to find out the champ….
