Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the release of “Dr. No,” the first James Bond film.Half a century after Sean Connery first portrayed the womanizing, gadget-savvy secret agent, fans around the world will be celebrating what has been dubbed Global Bond Day.

Cities ranging from London to New York to Toronto are holding events to showcase the popularity of 007 and its prevalence in pop culture. New York, for example, is hosting a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art.

Over the last five decades, 22 Bond films have been released, with the 23rd coming out next month. Six actors–Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig–have played James Bond, with Roger Moore beating the pack with seven total films.

The fourth film in the Bond series was the last directed by Terence Young. It won the Academy Award for special visual effects in 1966 and was the inspiration behind the name of an Israeli hostage rescue operation in 1976.

Bond Actor: Pierce Brosnan

Terri Hatcher, who plays Paris Carver in the film, says she accepted the role to fulfil the dream of her then-husband, Jon Tenney, to be married to a Bond Girl. Opening Weekend Gross: $26.2 million

Bond Actor: Pierce Brosnan

This is the first movie where James Bond was played by Pierce Brosnan. There was a six and a half year gap between this and the previous Bond movie, 'licence to Kill,' because of a lawsuit between MGM and Sony over a remake of 'Thunderball.' This gap is the longest between any of the movies in the series.

Critics didn't see the on-screen chemistry between Bond girl Denise Richards and Pierce Brosnan, earning Richards a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress and the duo a nomination for Worst Onscreen Couple.
